My first camera was a Canon Powershot S100. I don’t know why I bought it. Perhaps it was cheap. Perhaps a window opened in my mind requiring a creative outlet.
I studied maths at uni, so I had a good grasp of geometry, and I was quite good at composing an image starting off.
My 2nd camera was a Canon Powershot S5 IS, a step up in features from the S100. It had greater zoom, greater resolution, and perhaps greater dynamic range (range of colours in the photo). I took this with me on a trip to Europe.
When my confidence started increasing, I came across the idea of moving up from a point and shoot to a DSLR, which was an intimidating prospect at the time – so many bells and whistles to control. I started researching gear on dpreview.com, and narrowed my choices down to a Canon EOS 7D and a Nikon D7000. The higher resolution of the 7D was the clincher for me, and I have never looked back.
I have since moved onto a Sony Alpha 7ii.
